New Orleans 2011 Roll Call!

March 13th - 19th, 2011
The date is quickly approaching when we will pack up our gear and head south to the Gulf Coast. So if you want to come along, now is the time to contact us.
We will be working this year with The St. Bernard Project, a wonderful organization that works to rebuild houses and neighborhoods in St. Bernard Parish, located just outside of New Orleans proper. St. Bernard Parish was devastated by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, and is still in the long process of recovery, as is much of the area.
I don't want to fill this newsletter with the info I've given you before, so you can see our previous New Orleans newsletters here and here for more info. But here are the basics:
-
Work Begins Monday, March 14th.
-
Housing is arranged for at the Marquette House Hostel.
-
Estimated Cost per person is in the $350 range (minimum).
-
Kitchen space will be available for those looking to keep costs low.
-
Some Financial Support may be available, contact for details.
-
Donations from those not able to attend but wishing to help others attend are always welcome (we already have two or three people who would love to give their time and effort with some financial assistance).
If you're looking for a great week of hard work and fun, sign on! You won't regret it.

Jack Vasel Memorial Auction
If you are a board game player, you very well may know Tom Vasel's name. He's a game reviewer at The Dice Tower, and he has given hundreds of hours of his time over the years to introducing people to the hobby he loves.
Tom and his wife Laura Beth are the parents of six children, all daughters. In November, their first son was born, Jack Vasel. But the story is not a good one. Jack contracted E.Coli Meningitis, and was left with severe brain damage. Over the course of two short months, his condition worsened, and he never left the hospital. Jack Vasel died last week.
The community of gamers over at BoardGameGeek.com have rallied around the Vasel's in a way that, frankly, I have never seen. They have started a memorial auction to help raise money for the Vasels, to pay for the medical bills and funeral costs that are insult to injury at a time like this. As of this publication, there are four hundred and thirty-five games, pieces of art, and other items being offered by the users of BGG. They run from family games like Apples to Apples to out of print games like Antiquity to games signed by the designers, and all the way to game company offerings that have not been released yet, and will be sent to the winners before they hit the stores.
How does the Magic: The Gathering Collectors Edition sound? All the cards from the original set of this classic, including all 5 Mox's and the fabled Black Lotus? It's there, waiting for you...along with an autographed picture of Robert Plant, and much more (including maybe a clue or two about a GfH event at this year's Gen Con, if you look closely).
I encourage you to go take a look. There are several opportunities to contribute even $5 or $10, and you will be amazed at the outpouting of support you'll witness, from regular people like you and me.
- Tom Vasel's updates over the last couple of months can be found here.
- The auction itself is here.
The auction ends Monday, February 7th.
